In April last year I found myself suddenly immobilized with a terrible condition. My neck became stiff and the slightest movement brought agonizing pain. I also experienced severe pain in my shoulder which traveled to under my left arm and caused numbness upto my fingers.
My doctor diagnosed this as disc prolapse (C 6-7) with radiculopathy. I was immediately admitted to Maharaja Agrasen Hospital where I was treated for nearly a week. Hospitalization, investigations like MRI, USG, ECG etc. and treatment cost me Rs 42,000/-. This was followed by physiotherapy for about 8-9 weeks which further cost me Rs 21,000/- (at Rs. 320/- per day). On 3rd of June while I was undergoing physiotherapy there was a relapse of my symptoms and I was again admitted to Maharaja Agrasen Hospital for 2 days and paid Rs. 11,000/-. This time round I was advised to go for surgery.
For a second opinion, I went to WIMHANS and was admitted for 3 days. Another round of investigations like X-Ray and MRI followed. The process cost me about Rs 23,000/- and again surgery was advised. I grew worried and made a tentative booking for surgery at AIIMS and alongside continued treatment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital under Dr. (Col.) Madaan. Maintaining this regimen cost me another Rs 8,000/- attributable mainly to his visits. Besides, I spent around 18-20 thousand rupees on treatment including cost of commuting.
During my treatment it was forbidden to lift more than 1 kilo using my weak left arm. I was also advised not to lift more than 2-3 kilos using my right arm as this would further weaken my already weak left arm muscles. I had to put on a neck collar all the time.
Looking at my condition, a friend suggested that I go to Australia for spinal surgery. I found out that this would cost me at least Rs. 600,000/- including travel, hospitalization and surgery.

Inspite of a painful and major spinal surgery in June 99 (at a rather early age of 34), I was still in a lot of pain in the lower back radiating to my left leg even while lying down. The neurosurgeon that had operated on me was at his wits end about which medicine to give as he had tried everything. A second MRI too was done to rule out any other reason. Physiotherapy gave me temporary relief but the support belt could not be separated from my back. I needed the belt constantly and still kept feeling the pain although it lessened.
I tried all types of alternative remedies like nerve pressing, reflexology, magnetic physiotherapy etc but to no avail. The pain would momentarily go away and then come back. I was very frustrated at the limitations it imposed on my life.
It was at this juncture i.e. around June 2000 that I read about Dr. Shikhar Kaushal. On meeting him I found him very confident of curing my problem and I got some hope.
